THE BEGINNING

The Nigerian Baptist Convention is the owner of the Baptist Medical Centre, Saki. The Centre was founded in the year 1902 by the Baptist Missionaries from the Southern Baptist Mission in America. It was first located at Elam Oke-Adagba, Saki. The hospital was moved to its permanent site at Ajegunle Saki in May 1952. The centre has risen from the status of a dispensary when founded to a 150 bedded hospital with land area of about 50hectres.

THE SCHOOL OF MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY

The School was established in August 2006 with the aim of tackling the dearth middle level Medical Laboratory Science Personnel’s prevailing in Oyo State, most especially Oke-Ogun Area of the State. The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) programme is a three (3) years of six semesters based course with a strong exposure to Medical Laboratory Profession. The School is FULLY accredited by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).

PHILOSOPHY OF THE SCHOOL

To produce middle level personnel who will work under the supervision of registered Medical laboratory Scientists, satisfy internationally recognizable standards and could undertake further Professional training and studies.

OBJECTIVES

(a) To instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for the profession: an appreciation of its application in different contexts (in areas such as general medicine, pharmaceutical industries, utility department (e.g. water corporations), research institutions etc. (b) To involve the students in an intellectually satisfying experience of learning, studying and research. (c) To provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of medical laboratory knowledge and practical skills: performing effectively in clinical diagnostic services, academics and quality assurance; and function independently in collaboration with other members of the health team in the care and management of individuals and groups at their levels of health care delivery. (d) To develop in students, the ability to apply their medical laboratory knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in laboratory medicine. (e) To develop in students through an education in Medical Laboratory Sciences, a range of transferable skills of value in medical and non-medical employment. (f) To provide students with knowledge and skills base from which they can proceed to further studies in specialized areas of medical sciences. (g) To generate in students, an appreciation of the importance of Medical Laboratory Sciences in an industrial, economic, environmental, health and social contexts. (h) To also empower graduates of Medical Laboratory Technician with skills that will enable them engage in income yielding ventures, that is, a re-orientation from the take-a-job mentality to the make-a-job mentality. ADMISSION POLICY The School maintains an open admission policy to qualify students without discrimination on race, ethnicity, religion, denomination, sex, colour, creed and political affiliations. They are to be truly interested in the course, desire sound education, willing to abide by the rules and regulations guiding the profession and that of the institution. The institution accepts eligible students who are expected to have completed their Senior Secondary School programme and obtained credit passes in relevant subjects as approved by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Candidates seeking admission into the programme should possess the following minimum entry qualifications. a. Candidates should possess at least 4 credits at Ordinary Level GCE or SSCE, NABTEB Examinations at not more than 2 sittings. The subjects should include: Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English Language with at least a pass in Physics. b. Direct Entry: - Students applying for admission through direct entry must possess Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) certificate or Ordinary National Diploma (in Science Laboratory Technology) in addition to (a) above shall be considered for admission into the 200 level of the programme . c. Entrance Examination form is on sale April to October every year. ACADEMIC REGULATIONS AND STUDENTS’ COURSE EVALUATION The school has students’ handbook that spells out academic regulations which include 75% attendance before writing examinations. Students’ courses are evaluated by a combination of 30% continuous assessment and 70% end of semester examination including practical examination. More also, suitability examinations are conducted for the final year students before presenting the successful ones for the Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria Qualifying Examination for Technicians. Marks (%) Letter Grade 75 – 100 A 60 – 74 B 50 – 59 C 40 – 49 D 0 - 39 F SUCCESS RATE IN THE NATIONAL MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN EXAMINATION The school maintains an average pass of between 80 - 100% successes in National Medical Laboratory Technician Examination since established. MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING The school has memorandum of understanding with the following establishment: ⦁ Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso ⦁ Oyo State Hospital Management Board LIBRARY The following Library facilities are available for our students: ⦁ Baptist Medical Centre Central ICT Library ⦁ The Departmental Library in the School ⦁ Baptist Medical Centre, Saki Central Library SCHOOL FEES This is paid directly to the hospital central account. TRAINING FACILITIES: ⦁ Four well-furnished lecture rooms ⦁ Two well-equipped teaching laboratories HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION Hostel accommodation is compulsory for all students RECREATION Sport and games arena are intact in the premises, a football field, lawn Tennis Cut, Table Tennis, and Volley ball pitch are available for students. FEEDING Standard catering facilities are available in two places within the hospital area for students. WATER SUPPLY This is being pumped regularly to the premises from the standard borehole dug in the centre. POWER GENERATION We have three generators - one medium, one 100KVA and the third one servicing the whole centre is 250KVA for regular supply of power. HOSPITAL/COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIP This is very cordial and hitches free. STATUS OF THE SCHOOL The school is one of the few fully accredited Colleges of Health Technology in Nigeria. The school was fully accredited by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria in October 2016.
